Maria Kannegaard Trio
Mythical trio ready for Bærum Jazz Festival 2024
There's a special kind of quiet mystery to be found in the large sound surfaces, elongated melodies and gentle rhythms of the Maria Kannegaard Trio.
The trio's music has a calmness all of its own - an absence of excitement while at the same time searching for new terrain.
The pianist
The interplay between pianist Maria Kannegaard, bassist Ole Morten Vågan and drummer Thomas Strønen has a unique kind of elastic suppleness. The concept of time and harmony is stretched and stretched in a curious search for new sounds and melodies. It's raw, intimate and so beautiful that almost the entire emotional register is really utilised. To call the music beautiful is almost flat - there are so many layers of sounds and melodies in all denominations that you become totally enveloped in the soundscape.
When the trio enters the Great Hall in October, the audience will experience three rarely gifted musicians with a unique ability to move the listener.
Many people have heard Maria Kannegaard's powerful life story through the NRK podcast ‘The Pianist’. Hearing about the challenges that mental illness has created for Maria may make you appreciate experiencing the trio live even more. The illness has led to long breaks from music and it has cost a lot to come back as a composer and performer. In addition to the rewarding music, this thematic backdrop adds even more weight to the art the trio will be presenting to audiences in October.
